# Keep Section membership separate from subject-class enrollment

A Section is a continuing collection of students, normally formed from incoming students who stay together. The optional home group previously discussed is this same Section, not a second mandatory group. Preserve the group's continuity and historical student membership across enrollment periods, while actual Subject Classes carry the teacher, weekly times and attended roster for each period.

A student may attend a class normally serving another Section, or omit a credited/ineligible subject, without changing Section membership. Regular enrollment defaults to the current-period Subject Classes normally serving the student's existing Section, matched to applicable curriculum requirements; staff adjust individual exceptions for retakes or other needed subjects. This supports ordinary groups staying together without forcing every class roster to equal the whole Section. The curriculum remains the subject requirements; actual finalized class enrollment determines timetable, COR subjects and teacher rosters. Group display-name progression remains under discussion if needed.

One Subject Class can be a usual/default offering for multiple Sections when the relevant curricula use the same subject and class capacity permits enrollment. Keep one actual class, teacher assignment, timetable, gradebook and roster, with capacity counted across all its enrolled students. Associating another Section must not duplicate the class or create another teacher booking. Section membership and class-default associations are separate from each student's actual attendance.

Confirm a proposed new Section membership when the Registrar finalizes enrollment; draft suggestions do not reserve places. Continuing current members remain counted toward Section Capacity across periods and are not counted again when enrollment is renewed. Subject Class seats are renewed separately for each period. Recheck both limits before finalization, and require review or the agreed explicit capacity exception if a place is no longer available. Do not silently change a reviewed assignment or leave partially confirmed membership when finalization fails.
